While visitors may look for art galleries and sculptures to give
an idea of local art, Phuket
has world class pastry chefs in many of the five star hotels and
resorts that create unique award winning ice sculptures and pastries
that attract the eye as well as the appetite.
Recently, Laguna Phuket sponsored the annual Sea Turtle Conservation
Release where hundreds of infant sea turtles, raised in hatcheries
operated by the Royal Thai Navy, were sent scattering into the Andaman
Sea in front of the Dusit Laguna Resort. As this species of turtle
is close to extinction due to harvesting for their valuable shells
and meat, each year the Laguna Phuket cluster of resorts, raises
community awareness of the need to protect these turtles who have
lived in local waters for thousands of years.
And as all events in Thailand,
the event must be fun so the five resorts at Laguna Phuket compete
with one another to make the most unique, remarkable pastry which
commemorates the occasion.
Five large turtle themed cakes are constructed and the lucky winner,
which this year was the Banyan
Tree Phuket, gets eaten by the hundreds of participants.
