It's
always great news when a shop opens offering distinctive handicrafts
and souvenirs. Such a place is the Blue Witch boutique in Phuket
town on the corner of Phuket and Kra Roads.
You can't miss the shop, especially at night when the bright saa
paper lanterns shine and invite the shopper into the boutique.
The owner, Khun Thitiyathon, graduated from Silpakorn University
in Bangkok where she was awarded a degree in Decorative Arts. She
has used her talents as a designer and other talents as a businesswoman
to create a unique and exciting line of products certain to excite
the visitors to Phuket.
"I built a factory in the north of Thailand outside Chiang
Mai where I employ 14 graduates from my university who design our
products and another thirty workers who complete our line of lanterns
and ceramics," says Khun Thitiyathon.
The lanterns are made from saa or rice paper and a batik type process
is used to create patterns and lively colors which fade into one
another. Her lanterns are meant to hang from ceilings or sit next
to an area for relaxing.
Most exciting are the line of one-of-a-kind coffee mugs which are
made in various animal forms. It could be a horse or an octopus
or a tiger or a whale that you hold in your hand while taking a
drink.
Blue Witch Boutique offers unique products including handicrafts
from hilltribe weavers in the northern mountains.
"I want to help these people who live out in remote areas.
If we can provide them with a livelihood, they won't have to leave
their villages. They are very talented making crafts so we hope
that our business grows," comments Khun Thitiyathon.
