Jean Kaplan's account of Boogis Street, Singapore,
in the 1960s says, "The air is thick with the aroma of exotic spices.
Every kind of seafood imaginable, curries, satays, Chinese noodles
and tropical-fruit stands line the sidewalk. Eager customers walk
from stall to stall choosing delectable dishes while others enjoy
a leisurely drink before venturing to the food stalls."
The Sheraton
Grande Laguna Beach in Phuket
has re-created this exciting Asian marketplace dining experience.
Instead of a paved sidewalk, the Sheraton Marketplace is tastefully
built over a lagoon with a commanding view of the masterfully designed
Sheraton complex.
The most fun aspect of Marketplace dining is the ambience and the
Sheraton Marketplace is no exception. It offers an exciting, international
flair with performances like Thai boxing, sword fights, a magic
show, Korean Lion Dance and traditional Thai dancing on different
nights of the week.
On Thursday evenings however, colourfully clad dancers in Spanish-style
costumes dance to Salsa and Jazz. You can order a drink, enjoy the
show (it's worth watching!) and then meander through the Marketplace
choosing scrumptious dishes at your leisure.
The Salsa and Jazz show begins with the upbeat pop song, "Volare".
This Las Vegas-type dance is frolicsome and fun to watch. Shapely
dancers in shiny purple costumes lend an air of lighthearted carnival
atmosphere to the Sheraton Marketplace. Next is a slow, sensual
Lambada, danced in colourful Mexican costumes. This dance is followed
by a lively hip-swaying Cha cha: it almost makes you get out of
your seat and join the show. A modern Jazz dance to the song, "One",
is skil fully performed with the dancers wearing black hats and
traditional black-and-white outfits. "Soccer Party" is a lively
Salsa danced with tambourines: the sexy "La Bamba" danced in
traditional Brazilian costumes is a feast for the eyes.
Before Ricky Martin's raspy voiced "La Vida Loca", Salsa was
virtually unknown in Thailand. This song has brought worldwide attention
to the dance and is obviously a favourite with the dancers as well
as the audience at the Sheraton Marketplace. On Thursday evenings,
from seven to eight, you can enjoy lively and modern Jazz dance
in the very relaxed atmosphere. With ten years' experience, the
dance troupe that performs this "Variety Dance Fever Show" is highly
talented and professional . . . the beautiful costumes are hand-made
and designed by an expert costume designer from the Philippines.
Dining at the Marketplace is just as delightful as the entertainment.
The Marketplace comes complete with traditional Thai wooden carts,
brimming with a delicious assortment of Thai, Chinese and Indonesian
dishes. The vendor's carts are full of Thai appetizers, dim-sum,
Chinese and Thai soups. There is a complete Indonesian-style rice
station, satay, barbecue stalls and fried and steamed noodles. You
can order unique dishes like roti or maktabah at the Marketplace.
These dishes are usually only available at street-side stalls.
At the Sheraton, if you choose to, you can also dine at the Tea

House, a Chinese restaurant that serves Cantonese and Sichuan food;
