 Chinese Astral Arts

Most people from the West know their astrology sign.

A popular feature in daily newspapers around the world, many wouldn't think of starting their day without checking out their astrological forecast for the day.

However, on Phuket, which has a large ethnic Chinese population, Chinese astrology is more common and more important in establishing auspicious days to marry, open a business or make any serious transaction.

The Chinese astrological calendar is divided into twelve year cycles which have the names of animals who represent various character traits.

"Yes, but Chinese astrology is far more complicated than this," comments Chang Kim Sia, who has set up a center for the Chinese astrological arts in the lobby of the Metropole Hotel in Phuket Town. "We also consider the five elements of wood, fire, sand, iron and water as influences not only for the birth year but for each day." Mr. Chang provides a variety of consulting services including No Heng, a more obscure practice of reading the shape and characteristics of the face.

"The face is the mirror of one's destiny. Lines are significant and texture of skin and shape of features as cheekbones give indications of individual strengths. It is always much easier to read the face of an older person as there are so many more facial characteristics," he continues.

Mr. Chang was born in Thailand but at age 3 years he traveled with his father who was a Chinese astrologer to China where he studied the astral arts. He returned to Thailand and has built a career not only counselling customers on their personal destinies but is an expert in Feng Shui, the art of arranging a home or office to achieve maximum prosperity.

He enjoys meeting foreigners and can convert international birthdates into the Chinese system. His advice runs from destiny about work, love and money to what colors are the most beneficial to wear for high energy and good health.

Certainly a visit to a Chinese astrologer will add interest to any visit to Phuket town or a holiday on the island. Contact the Metropole Hotel at Tel: 215 050
