The mission was clear. The cause, a good one. The
orders were to have the most fun possible, within legal bounds,
and judging by the quakes of laughter, the chimes of wine glasses
and the packed dance floor, all obliged.
The Phuket Animal Welfare Society, (P.A.W.S) held a Swinging 60s
Evening recently at the Kamala
Bay Terrace Resort. The objective of the event was to raise
at least 50,000 baht to contribute to the making of an educational
video on the work of P.A.W.S. Philanthropy was certainly in the
air as P.A.W.S Chairman, Mr. Howard Cant, said he was very pleased
with the THB 93,000 raised.
P.A.W.S is a truly outstanding charity. Visitors to Thailand
and residents alike, despair at the condition of the stray dogs
and cats but the dedicated people of P.A.W.S are actually doing
something about it. In addition to sterilising, vaccinating and
feeding the animals around the island, P.A.W.S tries to raise awareness
within the local community. They aspire to help people understand
and ultimately cooperate in the management of the stray animal problem.
P.A.W.S relies on the generous support given by a long list of
impressive sponsors. Informed businesses in Phuket
see the long-range benefits of controlling the stray animal situation
and donate kindly but the costs are significant, so the society
holds special events periodically to boost funds.
The Swinging 60s Evening was a lot of fun. Party-goers dug
out their mini-skirts and tie-died specials to be eligible for the
prize of best dressed rock and roller or hippie. The prizes, donated
by P.A.W.S sponsors, were numerous and included many sought after
items such as VIP memberships to spas, free 2-days BMW 5-series
car rental and luxury hotel packages. Everything was up for grabs
but Lady Luck was needed for the raffle draw. The unlucky people
had their chance during the entertaining Sixties Mini Quiz.
Memories were stretched in answering the trivia questions, and
a healthy rivalry grew among the tables, but it was all in good
fun and the winners celebrated by sipping their prize, a nice bottle
of red.
The dance floor was kept busy as guests strutted their stuff to
the excellent music played by The Fabulous Longtail Brothers. Playing
old favourites from the 60s, the band rocked and toes were
tapping as people tried to remember the words.
Serious money was raised during the auction, with beautiful items
to bid for, including an elegant teak rocking chair, an original
Elly Laban oil painting and an exquisite antique statue of a Thai
musician. Many more items were auctioned and for some there were
numerous contenders. The new owners of these distinct items should
feel proud that their money is going to an honourable and needy
cause.
The plight of stray cats and dogs in Phuket
has been made a little rosier thanks to the tireless efforts of
the P.A.W.S volunteers. If you would like to know more about P.A.W.S
