Phuket is world-renowned for its natural beauty - surrounded by
the fertile Andaman Sea, skirted by white sandy beaches and home
to exotic peoples and their culture. Alas, Phuket
is also home to thousands of unwanted dogs and cats. Phuket's developing
tourism and infrastructure has provided an environment conducive
to a rapid rise in the stray animal population. Without proper care,
these hapless animals suffer from malnutrition, skin disease, parasites
and injury. To many people, they are a source of anguish and fear.
Yet this sad situation does not have to continue. With vision, compassion
and dedication, we CAN do something toward a positive change
Accepting the Challenge
Founded in 1996 and formerly known300 as the Phuket Animal Support
Group (P.A.S.G), P.A.W.S is a non-profit, volunteer organisation
that has accepted the challenge of changing the plight of Phuket's
stray animal population. P.A.W.S is made up of concerned members
from the local Thai and expatriate community. We are also supported
by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (W.S.P.A). W.S.P.A.
has representation at the U.N and the W.H.O.
Action
As there is no animal pound or shelter in Phuket,
P.A.W.S volunteers GO TO the animals - to the villages, the temples,
beaches and hotels.
There they
- feed
- sterilize
- vaccinate (e.g.Rabies)
- treat diseases/injuries
P.A.W.S is also involved with educating the local community in
responsible pet care, so that our goals are not simply met but sustained
for generations to come.
Assitance
Funds for the continuation of P.A.W.S' work come from local fundraising
activities, hotel/resort projects and tourist donations. The international
animal welfare organisation, W.S.P.A provide us with technical guidance
and equipment. Local and international veterinarians donate their
time, advice and expertise.
P.A.W.S is also respectful and thankful of their relationship with
the local government who help with the supply of medicines and surgical
supplies.
